Integrating Digital Skills into Everyday Learning

Government-Funded Educational Development Project

Video Series Production

2024

Project Overview

The “Integrating Digital Skills into Everyday Learning” project, led by the University of Eastern Finland‘s Teacher Training School, took place 2022–2024. Its goal was to improve ICT competencies, foster collaborative learning, and focus on student-centered initiatives. Adopting a “with students” model, the project encouraged teachers and students to solve problems together, albeit in different roles.

The initiative involved schools from North Karelia and Northern Savo. Students and teachers received programming training and access to educational materials, including resources on JavaScript, Scratch, and Minecraft Education Edition. Teachers also participated in supplementary training, both in-person and online.

The project produced a wealth of learning materials, and feedback from both students and teachers revealed how digital skills boosted motivation, enhanced abilities, and strengthened collaboration within the school community.

My Role & Contributions

Building on previous successful collaborations, the University of Eastern Finland commissioned me to create a video series for the project. The series included a 30-minute report for the project’s funder, the Finnish National Agency for Education, and two shorter videos on specific project themes.

Working closely with Project Coordinator Jaakko Väisänen, I helped refine scripts and set up video recording environments for the dialogue sections. My background in education allowed me to provide valuable insights to ensure the material was presented in the clearest and most effective ways possible. I was given full artistic freedom throughout the project, and I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with the team to brainstorm ideas and move quickly in a fast-paced environment.

Project Logo

I redesigned a new revision of the project logo, which took elements from a very colorful and detailed draft of the logo and another very simple yellow one – both created by different people. This resulted in the animated logo (as seen below) with yellow rings and became the visual basis for the whole video series.

Multimedia & Motion Graphics

Once I received nearly 100 photos and video clips, I began the editing process. I crafted a cohesive visual identity for the series, designing motion graphics for titles, transitions, and special cases such as workshop information and document excerpt highlights.

Minecraft-style Intro Animation

I also created custom animations, including a pixelated 3D map of the project’s geographical area, with Minecraft-style map pins and location labels that animated in and out, transforming into the project logo.

Additional Custom Animations

Shorter 2D graphics animations were used to explain key concepts throughout the project. In line with the AI theme in one of the videos, I also created an animation sourcing an image of a “friendly robot” from a generative AI prompt.

Sound & Music

I created a cohesive sonic environment for the visuals; carefully selected sound effects were present at nearly every transition and visual effect. For music, I sourced tracks from my Jigsound royalty-free music catalog. The main theme, Arcade Adventure, complemented the Minecraft aesthetic, while background tracks like Idea Incubator, Let’s Put This Together, and Impressive Presentation maintained a professional, non-intrusive tone. For a Christmas-themed game featured in one of the inserts, I selected Jingle Bells (Chiptune), adding a playful touch to the project.

Reception & Results

Widely praised, the videos likely played a key role in securing further funding for similar academic projects at the University of Eastern Finland.

The materials continue to support the development of digital skills in schools.

Integrating Digital Skills into Everyday Learning: The Final Evaluation Report

In this video, PhD Jaakko Väisänen and PhD Lasse Eronen discuss the project’s impact, highlighting the collaborative learning environment it fostered, where students and teachers engaged in problem-solving together.

I also contributed voice-over work for a few sections in the video.

Artificial Intelligence as a Teacher

This video explores the role of AI in education, as part of the University of Eastern Finland’s Multidisciplinary Teaching Course. Students were tasked with independently learning new skills using AI.

In the video, student Juuso Lindgrén, interviewed by PhD Lasse Eronen, shares his experience of learning Python programming with the help of ChatGPT, which provided structure, ideas, and detailed corrections despite some challenges.
