Student Evaluation Discussions for High School

Academic Student Evaluation Project KAARO

Video Series Production

2023

Project Overview

In 2022–2023, the University of Eastern Finland undertook a project to explore practical methods for integrating the new Finnish National Core Curriculum evaluation criteria into everyday practices in highschools. This research was conducted within the university’s teacher training school by educators specializing in various subjects. Their findings were ultimately presented in a series of YouTube videos.

The project was part of the national KAARO network, funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education, aiming to improve assessment practices and enhance teachers’ evaluation skills through teacher education.

My Role & Contributions

Building on our previous successful collaborations, the University of Eastern Finland commissioned me to produce a video series for their project, consisting of two approximately 10-minute episodes.

In collaboration with Project Coordinator Jaakko Väisänen, I refined the scripts and assisted them in preparing the recording environments for the dialogue segments. My educational background also allowed me to contribute valuable insights, ensuring the content was communicated clearly and effectively.

Building Upon & Improving Existing Visuals

Working within the framework of an established graphical brand, I was given ample artistic freedom to refine the visual elements. My goal was to refresh the visual style while ensuring consistency with previous releases. Fortunately, I had already developed most of the visual templates needed in the project, as it was a natural continuation of a prior collaboration in the same year.

Custom Animations & Graphic

During the editing phase, I meticulously polished all video and photographic materials, designed custom visual elements, and added motion graphics templates and transitions. For particular topics in the videos (including the Bloom Taxonomy and Strawderman Model), I designed custom animation sequences to be presented alongside their verbal explanation. Additionally, I created attention-grabbing video thumbnails and added subtitles to ensure accessibility.

Grade-Based Learning Pathway

Geography and biology teacher Riikka Korosalmi introduces a grade-based learning pathway, inspired by self-determination theory and Bloom’s Taxonomy. It allows students to choose their level of tasks, with lower levels focusing on basic skills and higher levels requiring more complex tasks. The aim is to promote student autonomy and positive learning experiences. “Not everybody has to do everything.”

Students' Assessment Competence

PhD Lasse Eronen, along with doctoral researcher Susanna Toikka, discuss high school students’ assessment skills, highlighting the evolution of assessment practices, the importance of self-assessment, and the role of emotions in learning, while also emphasizing the value of fostering positive emotional experiences for better learning outcomes.

Reception

The feedback from the client and their colleagues at other universities was overwhelmingly positive, particularly praising the visual quality and overall excellence of the final product.
