Project Overview
The fourth installment of artist interviews at the Hailuoto Music Festival returned to the charming “festival headquarters” – a picturesque wooden house nestled in the heart of the island.
My Role & Contributions
I planned, conducted, and produced this interview series for online release, with additional photography and assistance by Elisa Vesterbacka.
Oulu-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Harri Laakkonen curated a season-themed concert, Soittajan vuosi. In his interview, he reflects on the origins of the idea and explores themes ranging from the fundamentals of composition to the importance of continually challenging oneself.
The Helsinki-based flute trio WaCava – Hanna Tissari, Johanna Pitkänen, and Johanna Salminen – shares insights about their performances, experiences in Hailuoto and at the festival, and, of course, the secret behind their distinctive name.
Pianist and corporate trainer Mika Orava reflects on his personal connection to music. He also examines the interplay between creativity and discipline through the lens of fugues and preludes, as well as the historical significance of classical music.
Pianist Joanna Broman, who performed at the festival and co-led the Hailuoto Masterclass on Argentine tango alongside Ville Hiltula and Janne Tateno, delves into the musician’s profession through the lenses of confronting fears, personal growth, and the values of a volunteer-based festival as a meaningful exercise in humility.
Returning for his second appearance at the festival, singer and choir conductor Raimo Paaso discusses the personal significance of music, particularly the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as his long-standing collaboration with the Oulunsalo Ensemble.
Festival veteran Laura Palmgren-Neuvonen, involved with the Hailuoto Music Festival since its early days, discusses her various roles and the overall atmosphere of the event.
