Roll & Rock (Original Soundtrack)

Digital Music Release for a Mobile Game

Music Composition & Production

2015

Project Overview

Roll & Rock is an educational mobile game for which I created the graphics, sound, and music. Set in a vibrant, cartoon-inspired world, players join Joe, the enigmatic stonemason, as he journeys from Finland’s Saana and Japan’s Fuji to Australia’s Ayers Rock, Egypt’s pyramids, and finally Stonehenge – all in search of hidden gemstones.

I have collaborated with Eero since 2014 on multiple projects. He has proven to be an exceptionally creative and visionary thinker, both in graphic and musical solutions. At the same time, he is highly committed to logic and functionality, which has elevated our project execution to an excellent level.

Solutions created by Eero have always been delivered on time, and he has been highly attentive to the client’s needs. He’s an extremely reliable collaborator, and his contributions have been invaluable.

Marko Savikurki

QA Specialist & Game Developer

In 2015, I worked with Eero on the educational game Roll & Rock. While I handled the game programming, he was responsible for all visuals, music, sound effects, animation, and various production-related tasks. We later extended the collaboration to include the game’s official website, which Eero designed as well.

As the game programmer, I appreciated how carefully prepared and well-structured all the art and audio assets were. Everything was optimized and delivered in a way that made implementation quick and straightforward, which saved time and kept the development process smooth.

Having been involved in several game projects, I know how demanding it is to wear many hats in a single production. Eero managed that challenge exceptionally well, with a calm and organized approach that consistently led to high-quality results. Working with him gave me confidence that whatever we set out to build, we would absolutely get it done.

Since Roll & Rock, I’ve come across Eero’s other creative work, and it’s clear that his strengths in visual and musical design extend across a wide range of projects. I would gladly work with him again and can confidently recommend him for any role that demands creative quality, reliability, and attention to detail.

My Role & Contributions

The game, published in 2015, inspired me to release the music I composed for it as a standalone album. Many of the six tracks feature extended, full-length edits that go beyond what’s heard in the game. I also designed the album’s cover graphics, based on the game’s main character and assets.

The album is available for streaming on all major platforms.

This is the first track players hear, setting the game’s tone in the main menu with a brisk big band and funky rhythm. It introduces the game’s two main melodic motifs, later heard in different variations across the levels. There’s even an electric bass solo in the middle – because why not?

Joe’s journey begins in Lapland, where he marvels at a wintry mountain landscape under the northern lights. A Finnish folk-inspired tune opens the track with a lively accordion oompah rhythm, followed by a mysterious passage featuring (trigger warning) a shaman drum, wind chimes, and a delicate string ensemble.

Joe soon finds himself in Japan, at the foot of Mount Fuji! A classic pentatonic melody played on Far-Eastern plucked string instruments joins a lush pan flute and bells in conversation with the game’s main theme. Just when you think it’s all traditional, a groovy bassline enters to shake things up and jam with the pan flute.

Who knows? But when Joe reaches Ayers Rock in Australia, the soundtrack brings out all the stops: a jaw harp, didgeridoo, flute, and rhythmic percussion create a vivid intro. From there, a high-energy country track featuring banjo and harmonica takes the lead, tying in the main theme. Be warned – this track is dangerously catchy!

Our protagonist Joe now finds himself in Egypt, awestruck by the grandeur of the pyramids! The soundtrack turns Orientalism to eleven: An exotic flute and clarinet melody weave through a whirlwind of Middle-Eastern percussion, while an oud runs mesmerizing arpeggios. In the distance, ancient voices rise in a haunting choral backdrop.

Joe’s final destination is Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England, where the puns (and perhaps Joe’s patience) start to wear thin. Amidst rain and thunder, a distant bagpipe begins to play a familiar-sounding tune. But before you know it, the bagpipe steps aside for a Celtic harp and a lively English folk fiddle, featuring guest violinists Sinikka Ala-Leppilampi and Outi Kiiveri. The track nods to the main theme on the flute and bells before veering off into a playful, folkloric finale.
