Project Overview
In the autumn of 2013, the University of Oulu hosted a gala concert in its Saalasti Hall to honor the esteemed Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara and his remarkable career. The concert’s centerpiece was Peter Lönnqvist‘s piano arrangement of Cantus Arcticus, performed by Laura Mikkola.
Other performers included cellist Erkki Rautio, sopranos Virve Karén and Jenni Kinnunen, pianists Petteri Turunen and Samuli Seppänen, singer-songwriter Markojuhani Rautavaara, and the Oulunsalo Ensemble chamber orchestra under the direction of Sinikka Ala-Leppilampi.
Juha Ojala delivered an insightful celebratory speech as part of the program.

The release’s visual design was crafted by Petri Ovaskainen, with photographic contributions from Lauri Lajunen (birds) and Ari Korkala (Mr. Rautavaara).
The album was released as an exclusive limited-edition CD, with all proceeds dedicated to a fund supporting young composers. Thanks to streaming technology set up by Ilmari Mäenpää, Rautavaara himself was able to experience the concert live from the comfort of his home.
