Project Overview
In March 2024, Oulunsalo Ensemble presented Classics and Premieres at Oulu Cathedral and Rovaniemi Church, seamlessly blending timeless Baroque works with the world premieres of three contemporary compositions. Among these was Aava by Oulu-based composer Jarno Vanhanen, performed by renowned French violin virtuoso François Pineau-Benois. The piece, partially debuted at the concert, was later produced as a streaming release.
Aava (“open sea” or “glade”) evokes serene yet somber waves of emotion and landscape. In the first Larghetto movement, the soloist strives to pierce the shadows cast by the strings, reflecting the wintry essence of Jarno and François’ encounter in Oulu. The full concerto premiered later at the Hailuoto Music Festival 2024.

I strongly support Eero Karvonen. He is an excellent audiovisual engineer and a talented composer. Working on projects with him and playing his music is always a pleasure.
My Role & Contributions
As the concert’s technical producer, I recorded the performances in high-quality multichannel audio, then edited, mixed, and mastered the final recording. The polished track was delivered to Mr. Vanhanen for the publication of his streaming single for Aava‘s first movement. The audio track is identical to the one used in Oulunsalo Ensemble’s video production of the same event.
I also designed the cover art for the single release, based on a stunning promotional photo of the soloist taken by Edgar Arshakyan.
